outdoor living room
2014 (design)
A family wanted to utilize more of their heavily wooded yet very steep backyard located high above the Willamette River in lower Southwest Portland. The client wanted a playful interaction between the trees and the sloping topography, looking for more of an outdoor 'room' than a landscaped 'yard.' An outdoor couch was envisioned as a lively sculptural form that would be reminiscent of a natural rock outcrop that one could stumble upon in the adjacent forested hillside. The form faces a rock-lined fire pit, and curves away on one end to meet the stone steps leading back to the house.
